he chipmunk girl looked off in the distance, "The dragon has to use this main part of the canyon, but I know a way to get ahead of him.  Follow me."

Florence grinned, "The infamous shortcut?"

Jeanette smiled, "Would you rather run past the dragon saying, excuse us; but we are going to try to set an ambush for you, please move aside?"

Kamida giggled and Florence rolled her eyes, "Fine, lets go then."

The chippette led the small group to a crack in the canyon wall, "We should be able to get a little ahead of him this way; but we must run to make sure we get the time we need to prepare our plans."

Pence smiled, "Luckily the dragon is too big for this narrow passage, hmmm?  We might have lost him if he would have taken it."

Jeanette looked at Pence, "Like I said, he does not fit.  It would have been handy if he tried.  It would have slowed him down even more.  Now lets go!"

The little group moved into the pass with Jeanette Isabelle leading the way; closely followed by Florence who dragged the little sorceress along with her so she could keep up with the group.  After a long run they arrived back in the canyon.

Florence sniffed the air, "He's behind us now.  We're downwind of him so he can't smell us, lets go."

The little group walked on as fast as their legs could carry them, trying to gain some distance between the dragon and themselves.  After a while they found a huge depression in the side of the canyon.

"Looks like a perfect ambush spot," Jeanette Isabelle said.

Florence agreed, "Very little room for the dragon to maneuver.  If you can pump up Pence, there in that alcove, to the red dragon's size, he can block the way.  Then we could try to get that gem removed from the dragon's head."

Pence meeped, "I'm not a balloon!"

Kamida giggled, "She meant it in a figurative way, silly!"

Jeanette Isabelle smiled at Pence and Kamida; then turned her attention to her surroundings.  "See those ledges up there?  If I could get up there, I could try to jump on the dragon's head and hit the Gem."

Florence shook her head, "That's suicide."

The chippette grinned wryly, "So is taking on a adult red dragon."

Florence smiled, "Point taken."

Kamida looked up at Florence, "Pence might become bigger, but he will only become a little bit stronger, not nearly as strong as he should be.  If I make him bigger, the red dragon might mistake him for a golden dragon, but Pence's breath will not be any stronger then when he was a little dragon."

Florence nodded, "We can't attack the dragon when he's holding Kathy.  We need a distraction.  We must give him a reason to stop, if only for a few seconds."  The wolf girl looked at the little skunkette and the chipmunk. "Kathy could use her unicorn magic to get down to the ground safely, but the dragon could snatch her back up just as easily.  We need to distract the dragon for a little while.  Long enough for Kathy to get down to the ground, then she can make a run for it."

Kamida smiled, "Perhaps we could trick him with a fake dragon; then Pence jumps out, all grown up.  That should distract him long enough."

Pence grinned, "You could create a giant shadow of a dragon?  You know, like making a butterfly with your hands on the walls in a dark room using the light of a oil lantern."

Jeanette Isabelle grinned, "I get it.  You want the dragon to think we fooled it.   Then give it the surprise of his life by letting Pence pop out of this alcove."

The small group headed toward the alcove.  Florence looked around and nodded, "This is a good place.  He can't look directly inside; and a light source, even a small one, should illuminate the wall on the other side to create a nice shadow."

Jeanette Isabelle smiled, "You better get started Kamida, the dragon is getting closer."

Kamida nodded and began to focus on her magic.  She concentrated on the wall behind the group and created a globe of bright light.

Florence nodded approvingly, "Well done little one.  Enough light to cast a shadow, but not too much light to be too conspicuous."

Pence grinned, "I hope my voice goes big when I go big too, or the dragon might wonder why an adult golden dragon talks with the voice of a wrymling."

The little sorceress closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths.  "Now comes the hard part," she whispered.

Kamida concentrated on Pence and began her second spell.  She held her hands in front of her and began to whisper arcane syllables under her breath.  At the same time, small violet sparks began to move over Pence's body.  More of them appeared out of no-where.   After a few moments they covered the little dragon in a violet glow.

"Its working, its working!" Pence squealed with glee."  Sure enough, the dragon began to grow larger.  The little gold dragon went from a mere three feet, to ten feet, then to twenty, then to thirty; rapidly growing with each second.

The little sorceress seemed to lose her balance, then recomposed herself, and continued to concentrate on the spell.

Jeanette Isabelle looked worried, "Is she o'kay Pence?"

The little dragon grumbled, "She's doing okay; but it's very hard.  She's already beyond the safe limit.  This is draining a lot of energy."

Florence hissed, "The dragon!  He's almost here!"

Pence grumbled, "Kamida needs more time!  She's almost ready.  Please, try to stall the dragon."

Florence grabbed a can of haggis and smiled, "Leave that to me!  Jeanette Isabelle!  Move to your position, hurry!"

The wolf slipped out of the alcove and disappeared into the shadows.  Closely followed by the chipmunk girl.

There was a long silence outside.  Then a frustrated roar.   "WHO JUST HIT ME?!"

The little skunk girl whispered a few arcane words, then lost her balance and fell on her knees and shivered almost uncontrollably.  But the magic was done.  After a few seconds she recomposed herself and crawled toward the alcove wall so her shadow was no longer visible against the opposite wall.  Kamida whispered, "Get ready, here he comes!"

The dragon eeped, "But, I do not know what to say?  I haven't studied my lines.   I need more time to prepare!"

Kamida looked at Pence, "Are you going to be a bard or not?  Improvise, silly!"

Pence took a deep breath as he heard the red dragon approaching; then roared with all his might.  "STOP!  You are violating the treaty we have with the Unicorns of this world!  Release the Unicorn you hold, NOW!"

A little further down the road.  The shortcut the girls had used, lies peacefully behind the opening in the wall.  Suddenly its outlines began to blur, then faded away.

A majestic figure looked down into the canyon, where the shortcut once was and smiled, "That is no longer needed.  Good luck, little ones."
