A
s she was along side Kathy, Florence noticed some worn lettering on the handle of Jeanette's torch and asked about it.

"It says, ‘Tell My People,'" Jeanette answered, and started to explain.  "On that first early Christmas morning, two milk maids, Jeanette and Isabelle, come to the stable to milk the cows as they do every day.  They put their torches in their respective stand and when they saw the newborn Christ with His mother they got so excited that they had to run to the village to spread the news.  They went for their torches but were not there.  Instead were this torch and its twin.  Using the two torches provided them, they spread the news and brought back the whole village to see the Christ child.  Years later Jeanette and Isabelle passed their torches to their oldest daughters, then to their oldest daughters and so forth for approximately 2000 years."

"That torch and the other one have been burning for 2000 years?" Florence asked rather surprised.

Jeanette nodded, "As the matriarch, my paternal grandmother would have passed the torch to her oldest daughter and she would pass it to her daughter.  According to the 2000 year old tradition, I would have no right to the torch but for some specific reason unknown to me, she sidestepped tradition and entrusted it with me before she died."

"Doesn't your arm become tired with having to hold the torch?" Florence continued.

"I'm able to draw the needed strength from it; my arm does not get tired at all."

"Where is the other torch; who has it?" the ferret queen asked.

"The only member of our clan alive who would know is our matriarch, my aunt, but I haven't seen any of Dad's family since then.  The only one I have even heard from since is my cousin Renee, but even she stopped responding to my letters."

"Your aunt disowned you, your mother and your sisters because her mother broke tradition and passed the torch to her son's oldest daughter?" Kathy asked.

"We believe so." Rebecca sighed.

Just then Florence hears a faint voice behind her, "Wait, wait!"  Florence turns around and sees Kamida running toward them carrying what appears to be a heavy backpack, and running with her is a small copper dragon.

Jeanette, Provence, and their youngest sister Elaine turn around as well.  "I hope she brought something to eat with her," Elaine said.  "I'm starved."
