But the soft, pitiful sniffling in your ear can really ruin whatever chance of slumber you might have hoped to have, so Kathy slid open one eye to focus on the top of Florence's head. The lady wolf was lying beside her, with her face buried against Kathy's silken mane, and she was weeping ever so softly. Kathy could feel the hot tears burning through the fine hairs of her glossy white hide, tears that felt like sharpened knives as they cut their way through Florence's heart. Kathy's first reaction was to say, "Do you mind?" But then something in her new unicorn brain reminded her that this was part of her wish--*the ability to make people happy.* So she reached around with her velvet muzzle, and softly blew on Florence's cheek. Florence looked up, her amber eyes full of tears, and breathed in the sweet fragrance of the unicorn's warm breath. All of her sorrows and fears melted from her, and a trembling smile quivered on her muzzle. She lightly traced her fingers through the thick curl of forelock parting over Kathy's horn, sweeping it back from the unicorn's eyes. "Thank you," Florence whispered. "We're in this together," Kathy replied. "I'll help you as best I can; and I think you're going to help me, too, somehow. I don't know where we are, or where we're going, or what's going to happen when we get there--or why these chipmunks have a house big enough to fit a unicorn and a wolf--but I'm confident that everything'll sort itself out if we just hang together." Florence's smile grew slightly larger. "You know, Kathryn...I believe you're going to make a respectable unicorn, after all." |
