Hundreds of bejeweled butterflies gleamed like a galaxy of rainbow colored stars dancing among the pastel clouds. The night's gentle sleep lay over the little town around the darkened castle of the Ferret Kingdom. But not everything lay quiet far below the castle within the catacombs. "Are we there Yet?!" the unicorn complained again.
Florence nodded in agreement. "Please forgive me," Kamida began. "But, why were you crying earlier in the cell?" The wolfette's expression changed. The little skunkette noticed the reflected light from the torch glistened a little bit more in the wolf's amber eyes as they passed yet another countless torch. After several moments of uneasy quiet, Kamida heard a choked whisper. "I guess I didn't really understand, until just a few moments ago, just how much he filled a hole within my heart," Florence began. The others remained respectfully quiet. Each curious to know why she was here. Another torch sprang to life ahead, as another torch died behind them. "I...," Florence fought hard to remain in control of her emotions. "I guess I took for granted something that I never thought I might lose."
Another torch faded behind them, as an unnoticed glow began to glimmer ahead in the darkness. "...and...I took it for granted." Steadily the silvered glow grew in strength, guiding the chipmunk and unicorn leading their party toward their journey's end. Florence looked up and noticed that they were no longer in the darkness of the catacombs, but standing under the warm glow of a crescent moon. Staring at the remnant of the moon, reflecting a silver glow along the edges of the clouds, Florence noticed several bejeweled wings fluttering over her head. "I've never known so many to group like that over just one person before," the little chipmunk said in surprise. Florence was suddenly reminded of ancient memories. Memories of a love so powerful that she felt her strength renewed. A wave of warmth flowed over her and through her to the others in their little party. "I don't know about the rest of you, but I suddenly feel enlightened," Kathy grinned. Florence looked over at the unicorn in the party and was again overwhelmed by a sea of memories of one unicorn that kept reappearing in her life. "But how can that be?" she thought. "I've only known him for a short while." "That is where we must go," the chipmunk pointed to a dark silhouette in the distance, breaking Florence's mood. "That is where we'll find your true love locked in the Giant's chamber and guarded by the Red Dragon." "I don't understand," the little skunkette asked. "Why would a giant want a unicorn?" "I've heard that the Giant needs the light from a unicorn to see and to keep him warm from the darkness of his cold Keep," the chipmunk replied. "I thought it was impossible to contain a unicorn," Kathy said. "I think my unicorn was drugged," Florence said. "I found several bright red foil wrappers of dark chocolate around the last place I remember seeing him." "So you think he may have been subdued by the dark side of the chocolate?" Jeanette asked. "Yes," Florence nodded. "That was bad," Kathy groaned. "I'm afraid so," Florence said. "If I don't find him soon, I may lose him forever." "Oh, I didn't mean that," Kathy rolled her eyes. "I meant that awful pun." Both Florence and Jeanette shock their heads. "I don't get it?" Kamida asked befuddled. "I'll explain it later," Florence smiled. "Well, I guess we'd better get as far away from the Ferret's kingdom as we can tonight." Then shaking her head, Florence started heading toward her new destination. "What's wrong?" Kathy asked. "Ferrets," Florence muttered more to herself. "Why did it have to be ferrets?" |
